An active shape-adaptive wing leading edge enables the requirements of a smooth, continuous surface for a laminar wing. For the actuation light and robust pneumatic actuators were designed, which work area-wide. For these a special material was developed. Large area contact and non-linear behavior were considered in the development of the overall simulation model, which was validated through component testing. The novel design was assessed and compared positively with existing leading edge systems.
