In order to examine the functional and structural plasticity of procedural learning and to understand the neurophysiologic basis of grey matter changes in the MRI better, a combined longitudinal functional (fMRI) and morphometric (VBM) MRI-Study was done. The learning of mirror reading served as paradigm. A trainings-induced decrease of activation was shown in the right superior parietal cortex and an increase of activation was shown in the right dorsolateral occipital cortex, which correlated with a trainings-induced increase of the signal of grey matter in the VBM. With respect to the good correlation of the grey matter changes and the trainings-specific activation, synaptic remodelling of specific neuronal networks is discussed to be the reason for our results.
