For the optimization of the combustion process, investigations on a 2V optical access diesel engine were performed. Bowl positions and geometries, injection nozzle designs as well as operating points and injection strategies were varied. Metrologically, investigations on the mixture preparation were carried out by a combination of Mie-scattering and laser-induced fluorescence with computer-aided recombination. For investigations on the combustion process, high-speed imaging of soot luminescence with external illumination of the liquid phase was used. The more objective analyses were performed using image processing algorithms. Finally, measurements of soot concentrations in discrete surfaces were done by the use of the laser-induced incandescence. As a result, the complex inner-engine processes could be analyzed and the pros and cons of different combinations between nozzle designs and combustion chamber geometries could be shown.
