Mass-selected gold cluster on thin magnesium films show specific catalytic properties in the low temperature oxidation of carbon monoxide. For the characterisation of this cluster-oxide system, a laser evaporation cluster source was built and combined with an ultrahigh-vacuum analysis and scanning probe chamber. Scanning probe microscopy allows imaging surface structures even with true atomic resolution in best cases.
First experiments show the successful deposition of Au
8 cluster on graphite. Furthermore single oxygen vacancies at the MgO films could be identified, which are important for the catalytic properties of the cluster.
