The doctoral thesis analyses the financing behavior of family firms. The central contribution of the thesis consists in the theoretical identification and empirical validation of specific determinants of financial decision making in family firms. Based on a survey of 237 German family firms, the influence of goals of shareholding families and corporate governance structures on financial decision making is investigated. Thereby, the analysis focuses on financial management aspects and the usage of selected financing instruments. The empirical results show that a complex range of financing determinants exists in family firms, which encompass not only general company characteristics but also family goals and corporate governance structures.
