Aim of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of cerebral embolic events during and after percutaneous intervention of carotid artery stenosis. Therefore, the cardiovascular risk-profile of each of 51 consecutive patients was assessed prior to intervention and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) as well as a standardized neurologic and cognitive examination were conducted prospectively.
In a risk-modeling analysis certain cardiovascular parameters were related to a higher risk of embolic lesions than others, however, lesions did not show significant clinical disorders in the majority of cases. The study contributes to the value of DWI in postinterventional work-up of patients treated for carotid artery stenosis.
