The main focus of the thesis is encompassed in the design, synthesis, and applications of novel functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligands with multiple functionalities (e.g. amine-, amido-), as environmentally friendly water-soluble NHC precursors. Their behavior has been examined as potential catalysts in various demanding Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reactions, aiming to develop efficient palladium(II) catalytic systems based on the these low-cost, easily prepared and environmentally friendly ligands.
