The impact of orthognathic surgery on the temporomandibular joint is still discussed controversially. Based on a uniform collective of 375 patients, function and clinical symptoms of the temporomandibular joint, using the dysfunction index of Helkimo, were evaluated preoperative and 6 weeks, 6 months, 12 months, and 2 years postoperative. The results of this study suggest that symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunction can be significantly reduced by orthognatic surgery. No risk factors were found for long-term effects on the temporomandibular joint.
