Aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life of 505 obese patient before weight reduction employing the SF-36-Questionaire.
The results were compared to quality of life of patients who had undergone intervention of weight reduction, of healthy people and of patients with chronic diseases.
Furthermore we evaluated quality of life of obese patient in an outpatient, interdisciplinary weight-reduction programme of 52 week duration.
In all terms of the questionnaire (physical and mental terms) quality of life of obese patients correlated negatively with the severity of obesity.
In comparison to patients with chronic diseases as well as to obese patientes after structured obesity therapy, untreated obese patients showed a reduced quality of life.
Longterm follow-up of patients undergoing a structured therapy-programme showed increased quality of life after weight reduction, especially in physical terms.
