The flow field in a Pelton turbine is transient, three-dimensional and contains free surface flow. In order to be able to validate numerical models and to gain a better understanding of the flow phenomena which occur, measurements on a model turbine were performed. Results of the three-dimensional determination of the free jet geometry for two different inlet types are presented. The transient pressure on the bucket surface in various operating points was measured, permitting an analysis of the losses in the bucket flow. The integration of a high-speed camera into the Pelton runner made it possible to perform a visualisation of the transient bucket flow and to confirm the conclusions of the bucket pressure measurements regarding the losses.
