Abstract:
Introduction: The aim of this longitudinal controlled study was to investigate the efficacy of a one-time education programme of physical activity on long-term physical activity, physical performance health status and quality of life. Method: The study involved 92 non-insulin-dependent type 2 diabetics, 18-75 years old. The intervention group received a standard diabetes patient education programme as well as a 90 min physical activity education programme (DiSko). The control group (37 patients) only participated in the standard education programme. At outset, and after 3, 6 and 12 months, anthropometry, blood pressure, cardiovascular risk parameters, physical performance (6min walking test), physical activity, and quality of life (SF-36 questionnaire) were examined. Results: After 12 months, daily physical activity was higher in patients within the DiSko programme (outset: 5.9 +/- 6.2h/week; 12 months: 9.8 +/- 8.0h/week, p < 0.001). Physical performance improved significantly (outset: 456 +/- 129 m; 12 months: 506 +/- 129 m, p < 0.001) and the average weight loss was 1.5 +/- 4 kg (p = 0.008). The cardiovascular risk parameters and quality of life remained unchanged. Conclusion: The results of this longitudinal controlled study shows that a one-time education programme over 90 min motivates most patients with type 2 diabetes to exercise long-term.
