The term "compliance" is a measure for the quality of treatment. It describes to what extent the actual therapy matches a therapeutic optimum (e.g. a medication prescription), i.e., if the patient takes his medication as prescribed or takes part in other therapeutic measures. According to the current understanding of the relation between physician and patient, the therapeutic aim and measures are to be determined conjointly by physician and patient. To what extent these measures are put into practice, i.e. the compliance rate, is influenced by many factors. These factors are considered with regard to schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. Keywords: Compliance, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychoeducation.
