BACKGROUND: As a basis for future clinical questions, we evaluated the efficacy of hepatocyte transplantation in a surgical model using a subperitoneal or intrasplenic approach for cell implantation. METHODS: In rats, acute liver failure was induced by subtotal hepatectomy.
