The main aim of this work was the development of new strategies for the preparation of chemically stable micro- and nanostructured polymer grafts on various substrates. These new nanomaterials may open new perspectives in various fundamental and applied research areas such as sensor technologies, biomedicine, nanofluidics, nano-optics, biochip technologies and microelectronics. We have chosen for a two step strategy. First, the substrate is structured by electron beam lithography. In the second step, the polymer grafts are synthesized by the free radical surface-initiated polymerization, selectively on the previously irradiated surface areas. This strategy allows the preparation of highly defined three dimensional polymer structures on various substrates. Furthermore, different strategies were developed for the polymer analogue functionalization of polymer grafts.
