Infection with H. pylori leads to persistent colonisation and chronic inflammation of the gastric mucosa, thereby increasing the risk for the developing peptic ulceration, distal gastric adenocarcinoma and gastric lymphoma. In the current study we showed that cytokine gene polymorphisms influence mucosal cytokine expression, gastric inflammation and the long-term development of precancerous lesions in H. pylori infection. Host polymorphisms are associated with certain bacterial strain types, suggesting host-specific colonization or adaptation. These findings contribute to the understanding of the complex interplay between host and bacterial factors involved in the development of gastric pathology. Furthermore, we investigated the novel virulence factor of H. pylori hp0638 gene. We found the influence of hp0638 on adherence of H. pylori to gastric epithelial cells and bacterial colonisation.
