It was the aim of this retrospective study to analyse the factors that strongly influence the radio iodine therapy of benign thyroid illnesses. Out of the 115 evaluated patients, 93 patients had an autonomous thyroid nodule and 22 patients had the graves disease. 96% of the nodular goiter group and 82% of the graves disease group were treated successfully. The outcome of the therapy of the goiter group was negatively influenced by age. In the group of graves disease, a large gland and a long half live time had a negative influence on the therapy. The statistical logistic regression analysis reconfirmed these factors as independent significant. A negative influence of simultaneously given antithyroid drugs was not proofed in both groups. In conclusion of all given results it has to be outlined, that excellent therapy results are possible when a correct calculation of the required amount of radio iodine, a sufficient radio iodine application and the control of the reached dose at the gland are taken into consideration. Further more following this causes all other factors to become relative.
