We studied the history, the clinical course, the surgical management and the ong-term survival rate of 20 patients undergoing surgery for primary small intestine tumors at the Kreiskrankenhaus Altötting between 1986 and 1996. The histological classification showed 10 adenocarcinomas, 6 carcinoid tumors 1 lymphoma, 1 sarcoma and 2 benign neoplasms. Most effective in pre-surgical diagnosis were x-ray examinations and CT -Scan, one patient had to be operated under emergency conditions without preoperative diagnosis. 6 patients had only palliative procedures. Of the 11 patients with malignant tumors treated in curative intention, 5 are still alive after 6-14 years. The long term results were the best when lesions could be completely resected. Even in case of palliative treatment we observed an improvement of survival rate and quality of life compared to the situation without treatment.
