In this experimental study on 96 CD-rats we compared microvascular anastomoses by means of suture technique and the VCS-Clip-Applier-System. We anastomosed the aorta abdominalis with a diameter of 1,5 +/- 0,2 mm. The evaluation of the results was done using sonographic examination, microangiography, histological examination and vascular imprints. The follow-up periods were 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days. As major advantages of the VCS-Clip-Applier technique compared to the suture technique we found their easy and fast technical apprehension, their significantly faster anastomosing time (10,9 +/- 2,6 min versus 19,4 +/- 5,0 min) and their significantly favourable histological results regarding inflammatory response, foreign body reaction, necrosis of the tunica media, intimal hyperplasia and thrombosis of the vessel lumen. The main disandvantage of this new technique is the significantly higher rate of stenosis of the vessel lumen (15,8 +/- 6,0 % versus 4,1 +/- 6,6 %).
