The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of multivisceral resection (MVR) for the treatment of locally advanced colon carcinoma in the Surgical Clinic of the Technical University of Munich. The incidence of MVR was 13,6%. The incidence of postoperative complication rate, mortality, R0-resection rate was comparable to the patients without MVR. Prognostic significance was proved for the presence of positive lymph node status, residual tumor, poor differentiation, lymphangiosis carcinomatosa, vascular invasion and distant metastases. After a R0-resection the UICC stadium-related prognosis was comparable between MVR and not MVR. We conclude that by comparable complication and lethality rates, the R0-resected patients with locally advanced colon carcinomas may achieve the same long-term survival compared with tumours without infiltration of adjacent organs.
