Paediatrics became an independent speciality of the medical field at the beginning of the 20th century. One of the important research diseases of the time was scarlet fever, which found specific social significance because of its high mortality quota. Its aetiology was the topic of vivid discussion, also called the "streptococcic question". The casuistics from renowned contemporary paediatric textbooks describing the clinical course of scarlet fever are analysed in this thesis. The scarlet fever variation called "Toxic Form", described by Pirquet, meets the diagnostic criteria for Toxic Shock-Like Syndrome, which was officially described for the first time by Cone and his associates in 1987. Other authors have pointed out that Toxic Shock Syndrome and Kawasaki disease were also described well before their "official" discovery.
