In the present work selective low-molecular ligands were tested for their suitability for the fluorimetric detection of heavy metal ions in aqueous samples. For a high sensitivity a large sample portion in the measurement solution after the addition of the chelating agent is required. Therefore the optimization of the water portion in the solutions was the main topic of the work. The most promising results were obtained with a selective sulfonylthiourea, which forms only with Cu(II) ions an intensely red luminescent hexanuclear Cu(I) cluster. This reaction could also be observed in presence of matrices with complex composition or biological systems. Additionally, water-soluble polymers, modified with fluorescing N-acylthioureas, were synthesized and tested for their suitability for heavy metal detection.
