Functional somatic symptoms occur in some allergologic patients. Here, physical symptoms emerge that cannot be related to an organic etiology. Such functional somatic symptoms are diagnosed as somatoform disorders in psychosomatic medicine. Currently, this is a diagnosis of exclusion. However, the newly established diagnosis of somatic symptom disorder included in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-5 does not require symptoms that are medically unexplained. The etiology of the symptoms is not relevant and SSD can be diagnosed in addition to any somatic disease. Furthermore, the diagnosis of SSD is based on positive psychological criteria, i.e., cognitive, affective, and behavioral characteristics. Similar changes in the diagnostic criteria can be expected with the forthcoming ICD-11. These changes could help to target allergologic patients' psychobehavioral characteristics and to initiate psychosomatic treatment.     «
