Accounting for 1-2% of congenital heart defects, functionally univentricular heart (UVH) is a rare but challenging cardiac condition that requires interdisciplinary expertise. Staged surgical palliation with separation of systemic and pulmonary circulations is the primary goal for patients with UVH. Even though results have improved, certain risk factors for adverse outcomes remain. The objective of this study is to analyze early and mid-term results after the bidirectional cavopulmonary shunt and to identify risk factors for mortality and failure to complete Fontan.
