Background Quality of life and neurocognition are increasingly coming into clinical and scientific focus in the treatment of brain metastases. Objective This work is based on a selective literature search in the PubMed database on the topic of neurocognitive changes and quality of life after cerebral radiotherapy. It aims to provide an overview of the current data. Results and discussion Technological improvements in radiation oncology lead to faster and more effective high-precision irradiation. The potentially lower intracranial control after SRS compared to WBRT does not seem to have a relevant impact on survival. Therefore, preservation of neurocognition and quality of life is a central goal of treatment and the subject of current research.
