Gears – especially small, highly loaded, slowly running ones and pairings of different hardness – are particularly at risk for sliding wear. Wear rating methods are validated and protection measures are evaluated. Furthermore, the effects of wear on the load carrying capacity and the dynamics of gears are investigated. As one result an improvement of the rating method for the pitting load capacity acc. to ISO 6336-2 is proposed. The work has an experimental focus and is supported by theoretical studies and simulations.
