Hepatitis B virus is a major human pathogen and an estimate of 3.5 % of the world’s population are chronically infected by this virus. The first study in this thesis presents an up-to-date overview of the global genotyping data of hepatitis B virus and its worldwide genotype distribution while the second study covers clinically relevant virus variants and their geographical and genotypical distribution. The third study describes the establishment of a hepatitis D virus database for its sequence analysis.
