This book chapter highlights mucins as macromolecular components for liquids, coatings, or hydrogels that seek an application in biomedical engineering. We summarize current strategies to purify mucins from different animal sources and discuss different state‐of‐the art techniques employed to characterize mucins and mucin‐based materials. Furthermore, we pinpoint several fields of application in medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, and fundamental research where purified mucins can serve as valuable tools.
