The importance of physical activity in the primary and secondary prevention of cardiac diseases has been known for a long time. Regular and structured training is an indispensable component of the treatment of cardiac patients. In addition, recreational and competitive athletes are increasingly requesting a cardiological assessment in order to identify potentially threatening cardiac diseases. Aprofound knowledge of sports cardiology is necessary for aqualified training counseling of people with cardiac disease as well as for the distinction between physiological, sports-related changes and pathological findings. The German Society of Cardiology (DGK) curriculum Sports cardiology is based on the recommendations of the European Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation of the European Society of Cardiology and is divided into three levels (levels1 and2: focus on prevention and rehabilitation, level3: complete spectrum of sports cardiology including assessment of competitive athletes). The goals of the curriculum are higher individual qualification and improved quality of care for patients and athletes with issues in sports cardiology.
