The thesis documents and examines all of the Volkshaeuser (workers’ assembly halls) created by the German labour movement between 1890 and 1933 and retraces their changeful history. It deals with the specific characteristics of the builders, the planners, the functions and uses of the buildings. At the same time, aesthetic and ideal aspects of the architecture are being
analysed against the background of the manifold architectural developments taking place in the first half of the 20th century.
