This paper introduces a newway to enforce aircraft flight envelope protections based on specifications in the phase plane of a protected variable. The protection is based on applying backstepping on a set of transformed coordinates, such that accurate phase plane tracking can be achieved. Piecewise polynomials are proposed for the limit in the phase plane, to obtain less conservative protections that enhance the aircraft performance around the protected variables. The approach has a well defined and intuitive response behaviour close to the limit in which the distance from the limit is defined with a constant time to violation. Above the limit, aggressive disturbance rejection can be achieved. The results are shown in simulation of a multi engine general aviation aircraft.
