Novel main group element-based catalysts for the polymerization of polar monomers are presented in this dissertation. In addition to the optimization of the Lewis acids and Lewis pairs for a broad monomer scope, the focus lies on the first precise and catalytic polymerization of acrylonitrile and on the elucidation of the present mechanisms. Furthermore, the stereospecificity of main group and rare earth metal-catalysts for the polymerization of diethyl vinylphosphonate are thoroughly analyzed using novel NMR-methods.
