This thesis represents an efficiency and safety analysis of the granulocyte-monocyte-apheresis [GMA] in the treatment of ulcerative colitis in patients with steroid- and/or immunosuppressive-dependent or refractory course. This interim-analysis after 24 patients demonstrated a significant improvement in clinical- [CAI] and endoscopic activity index, 2-hour-erythrocyte sedimentation rate and quality of life after GMA; after sham only in terms of CAI. With a small number of cases so far, a significance of this group differences couldn’t be proven, yet; but a high potential of the GMA as a promising treatment option in UC with a good safety profile is already demonstrated.
