To investigate the influence of gender and sex hormones on the expression of NFκB, TNF-α, iNOS, PARP-1 and Caspase-3 in rat brain 14 days after CPB and 45 min of DHCA, 40 male and 40 female rats are distributed to 4 groups of 10: neutered/ intact DHCA group, neutered/ intact control group. PARP-1 shows a significantly increased expression rate in male and caspase-3 in female DHCA groups, hence neuronal apoptosis is gender dependent. NFκB shows the significantly highest expression rate in female intact rats, hence playing a key role in gender and sex hormone status dependent inflammation.
