The thermal joining is a novel process for the bonding of a metal to a thermoplastic material. For the production of high-strength plastic-metal connections by this joining process, a pulsed laser surface pre-treatment on the metallic joining partner was used and the resulting surface structure was analyzed. In addition, a suitable temperature and pressure process window for the thermal joining was determined and a method for the design of the trajectory in laser-based thermal joining was developed.
