This thesis considers the combination of structural optimization and the topic of adaptive structures. For this purpose, mechanisms providing a most efficient deformation of thin shell structures are discussed. These mechanisms are generated by parameter free shape optimization. Furthermore an extended concept of design control is presented, meeting the concerns and additional challenges of optimizing an actuated structure. In the last chapter, the usability of structural optimization for generating bistable structures is discussed.
