A holistic energy saving concept for microcontroller systems involving application requirements, system architecture, and circuit design techniques is presented. The key of this concept is a digitally enhanced LDO regulator making use of known system power information to adapt its maximum current drive capability. By combining a high current efficiency under all load conditions with a small integrated output capacitance, this regulator enables a highly flexible and energy-efficient system operation for typical ultra-low-power applications.
