Despite the common use of tranexamic acid during pediatric cardiac surgery, a reliable dosing regime for infants less than one year of age is still missing.
In our study 43 children less than one year of age were enrolled. Plasma concentrations of tranexamic acid were analysed by gas chromatography-mass-spectrometry. Pharamacokinetic data were investigated using nonlinear mixed effect models.
Our study comes to the conclusion, that the existing dosing regimen provides sufficient plasma concentrations. A modified dosing regimen using continuous infusion can reduce high peak concentrations, which are made responsible for seizures.
