Transbulbar sonography with measurement of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) can be a useful non-invasive tool in the diagnostic workup of elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Studies have shown, that the fomerly used normal values for children were too low. After establishment of a precise sonographic measurement technique a correlation of sonographic and MR based ONSD measurements was possible and higher normal values were defined. Considering these new results transbulbar sonography was applied on a population of pediatric patients with a suspicion of elevated ICP. Also the appearance of the subarachnoid space and the papilla of the optic nerve were assessed.
