Conditional automation in vehicles requires the steering wheel to support three different tasks: the manual driving task, non-driving related tasks during automated driving and the transition task between the driving modes. In this context, various approaches are investigated regarding the appropriate design of the steering wheel. For evaluation of the prototype concepts, user studies in driving simulators and in real driving conditions are presented. In these studies, especially the motoric behavior of drivers is focused.
