In a German-wide multi center prospective observational study financed by several german compulsory health insurance funds, about 500,000 patients with chronic pain (headache, knee arthrosis, low back pain or a combination thereof) were treated with body acupuncture („Modellvorhaben Akupunktur“). An extended documentation based on the German Pain Questionnaire (DSF) was available for a random sample of 4586 patients. This sample was divided into three grades of chronification according to the Mainz Pain Staging System (MPSS). Differences were examined before treatment, immediately after completing all acupuncture sessions and six months after start of treatment.
