Replacing crude oil with biomass to produce biopolymers constitutes a growing market. Due to small production capacities and low market penetration biopolymers are often more costly than conventional plastics. With an auction experiment the effect of information about biopolymers on consumers’ willingness to pay for such products was assessed. Participants offered higher bids after receiving general information about biopolymers or for a product labelled ‘Renewable Resources’ compared to a conventional product.
