Gastrointestinal complaints without proven morphological or biochemical pathology are known as functional digestive disorders. Irritable bowel syndrome is regarded as the principal form of these functional disorders. With the aid of olfactory and taste function tests, this thesis examines the aetiology of IBS. The olfactory and taste testing was carried out with Sniffin’ Sticks and Taste Strips. On the basis of the results presented, a central participation with a modified perception of these stimuli is probable.
