In a case-control study, we tested if the association of self-reported childhood maltreatments (CM) in adult FMS-patients is attributable to depression. The difference in self-reported sexual abuse between FMS-patients and population controls was not attributable to depression. Sexual abuse may constitute one (not obligatory) predisposition to FMS. In a prospective cohort study, we assessed the associations among CM, somatic symptom severity (SSS), depression and somatoform dissociative symptoms (SDS) in FMS patients. SSS were significant predictors of SDS.
