This study provides theory and implementation (with MATLAB) of the adjoint method for localizing soil perturbations. The adjoint method is applied for a two dimensional wave propagation problem for calculating the sensitivity kernel, where the perturbations are made visible. The adjoint solution is introduced as the Lagrange multiplier of this optimization problem. For solving the partial differential equation finite difference method has been applied. The solution is shown for domains with reflective and also with non-reflective boundary conditions using the Gaussian Taper Method.
