Metastasis is crucial for therapy and prognosis of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. There are two conflicting theories explaining metastasis of this carcinoma – a linear and a parallel model of tumor progression. Results of this study include early dissemination of tumor cells even in not metastasized tumors, heterogenic cell populations with different potential to metastasize within one metastasis and independence of metastasis form tumor size. By comparison of gene expression profiles, 19 differentially expressed genes could be identified. These genes play important roles in steps of metastasis and cell regulation like adhesion, migration and transcriptional regulation.
All these results support the concept of parallel tumor progression and emphasize the importance of individualized tumor therapy.
