New legislation make improvements for energy efficiency and NOx emissions in the energy from waste sector necessary. For these reasons a water steam cycle is designed which exploits the capabilities of current technology. Numerical analysis is used to understand the effects of processes like air preheating and flue gas recirculation on the available heat distribution in the flue gas. Different approaches are used to model NOx emissions and parameter variations are used to validate these approaches. Eight furnace concepts with different levels of air staging are investigated and discussed in respect to temperature distribution, gas burnout and NOx formation performance.
