Mechanistic studies on the effective dispersing power of MPEG type PCEs were performed in: (1) Portland cement contaminated with montmorillonite clay and (2) in clay-free calcium aluminate cement. In (1), depending on the graft chain length and density of the polymer, undesired consumption of PCE occurred by a delicate balance of intercalation and electrostatic attraction to clay. In (2), for the first time, intercalation of PCEs into CAC hydrates was proven under actual application condition and detected using SAXS analysis.
