This thesis is devoted to the study of quantum simulations of topological phases of matter with cold atoms. We start discussing how to engineer the Hamiltonian of several topological models via the unconventional use of a bi-chromatic optical lattice. We then consider the measurement of observables which can unravel the presence of topological order. Finally, we quantify the reliability of topological quantum memories encoded with zero-energy Majorana modes subject to perturbations.
