Beside its environmental relevance (“greenhouse gas”), CO
2 is a cheap and abundantly available C1 feedstock. In terms of sustainability it is of course very desirable to use solar energy to overcome the high stability of CO2, as it is the case in the photocatalytic reduction. Rhenium(I) catalysts show the highest activity and selectivity for the reduction of CO
2 to CO. Within this work binuclear Re(I) catalysts were synthesized and characterized with regard to its photochemical and electrochemical properties. In absence of a long lived one electron reduced species or in high dilution no kinetically relevant metal-metal interactions were found. However, the binuclear complexes show a clear bimetallic interaction due to the proximity of centers, which comes along with a great rate increasing effect.
