During the procedure of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreaticography (ERCP) sedation of the patient is necessary. Because of the risk of cardiopulmonary complications patients have to be monitored. The depth of sedation can be monitored non-invasively with a variable derived from EEG, the Bispectral index (BIS). In a randomized, single blind clinical trial oxygenation and cardiovascular complications during midazolam and propofol sedation during ERCP with and without BIS monitoring were compared .Regarding the primary study end point, the mean oxygen saturation, as well as the rate of cardiovascular complications and the mean propofol dose, no significant differences were found in the two groups. There was a significant difference, however, in the postinterventional recovery time.
